Damian’s aura flared. He shifted his stance and lightly restrained my shoulder as his dark green eyes swept across the plaza. “We’ve definitely got a watcher.”

I surreptitiously scanned the plaza before I started down the stairs. “I feel it, too. Try to act natural. See if we can spot them tailing us. Spark, keep an eye out.”

The little dragon darted into the air. Got it.

Damian followed me through the crowded square. It was impossible to keep track of anyone here. We had to get out on a side road.

Spark zipped down as we turned onto a broad avenue. I don’t see anyone pursuing.

“How much do you wanna bet we’ve got a couple of invisible wind demons trailing us?” I asked.

Damian flashed the small Potion of Seeing. “I thought we might ultimately have company. I was hoping the shop would have more. This will give one of us true sight for ten minutes.”

I gnawed on my lip as a thought flickered to life. “Spark, can you drink a potion?”

I can consume its magical essence, so close enough.

“Remember on the airship, when you made the ice devils glow so we could see them in the storm? Could you do that to invisible creatures if you could see them?”

The little creature rubbed its claws together eagerly. Yes. This is a delicious idea.

“Let’s lure them down an alley. Easier to target them and less collateral damage,” Damian said, his voice low.

We pushed past cobblers and bookstores until I spotted a long, deserted alley and ducked left.

Damian followed and pulled the potion out of his jacket. “Showtime, Spark. Drink up.”

The little glowing dragon darted forward and quaffed the potion. He belched a blue fireball, and his eyes started glowing. That is vile magic.

“What do you see?” I asked.

He looked around in a daze, as if completely stoned. So many things. There are strange creatures like jellyfish floating through the air. And a nice ghost sweeping the streets.

“Did it work, or is he high?” Damian asked.

“The wind demons. Are we being followed?” I pressed.

Spark spun into the air and quickly returned. Yes! Four. They just slipped down the alley. They are staying far back. Watching.

I stopped and pretended to read a pub menu hanging from a ratty looking door. “Okay, Spark, light ’em up. But don’t let them know you’ve seen them. Maybe approach from behind.”

Barbeque time. The dragon zipped off, and I lost him over the rooftops.

Forty seconds later, Spark dove out of the sky and flooded the alleyway with fire. As the magical flames died away, they revealed four wind demons, illuminated with glowing halos.

Spark zipped over our heads. All yours!

Damian pulled a bow from the ether and released three arrows in quick succession. One of the glowing demons exploded in a ball of crackling dark magic, but the other three shot into the air.

I soared skyward, looking for an advantage in altitude. One of the demons broke left and raced low over the buildings. I hammered him with percussive blasts of wind until he slammed into a rooftop, sending clay rooftiles scattering in all directions.
